Salkantay to Machu Picchu takes 5 days of trekking in that one can see different ecological zones of the Andes. The trek begins in the district called Mollepata which is located 3000 meters (9840ft) above sea level. Quechua is located between 2500 and 3500m (8200 and 11,480ft) and then, Suni Region is located between 3500 and 4000m (11,480 and 13,120ft) and Puna Janca is located between 4100 and 6768m (13448 and 22199ft and warm areas such as the jungle or Yunga are located between 500 and 2500 m (1640 and 8200ft) and is also where the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu lies within.

According to the Chronicler Inca Gracilazo of Vega; His Christian name of baptism was Gómez Suárez of Figueroa, he says that the Incas in the 15th century, performed realized sacrifices of 50 black LAMAS by order of Inca Pachacutec were being grateful for his victory to Huaca of Salkantay, after wining the Culture Chanca and is located in the district of Abancay 3500m (11,480 ft),

Salkantay one of the highest glaciers of Cusco located is located 6271 m (20,574 ft)
The name Salkantay is from Salka, a quechua word meaning wild, uncivilized, savage, or invincible, and was recorded as early as 1583. The name is thus often translated as
“Savage Mountain”.

After descending the steps of the Salkantay pass at 4600m (15,088ft) you will pass the high Andean place of Huayraqpampa where they will see families that cultivate the Andean potato called ‘papa’. We will find typical vegetation of the Quechua zone, for example, forests of Queuñales, Quiswar, Chamana, Alders, Chachacomo, Flora (made up of orchids like Sabralia Bichotoma, Odontuglosum, Epidendrum Secundom) amongst others.

Colpapampa is a favorite spot for day camps for travelers and many travel agents like
Abroad trekkers. It is possible to see along the way the hot springs, also
in this point simultaneously join the Vales of Totora 3100m (10,168 ft) and the Vally of Colpapampa 2850 (9,348 ft). These two Valleys form the Saint’s Vally Teresa, which then turns into the river Urubamba.

After 3 days of trekking to reach the village of Sahuayacu, or also known as La
Playa, we find the road that will lead to the village of Lucmabamba located at 2050m (6724 ft). After 3 hours of walking uphill to enter a forest of palm trees you will also see the ruins of Llaq’tapata, located at 2350m (7708ft).

The Llaq’tapata area looks collapsed and we do not know exactly who and how, as it still remains a mystery. This was discovered in 1993 by: National Institute of Culture and restored in 2004, for the same institution but still has 70% still being damaged by rain and vegetation.

After 7 hours of a difficult trek to reach Machu Picchu 2400m (7872 ft), today we visit different ecological zones, a variety of microclimates that are formed by cold areas (such as steep peak) and warm valleys.

Contamination of the Salkantay trek began in 2005. It now receives an average of 200 people per day between the months of June and September, which produces 200 kilograms of garbage per day. Unfortunately, some travel agents even leave their garbage waste in the sanctuary of Salkantay.

In 2007 the NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF CULTURE they started to receive payment, to see the Mountain of Salkantay, without protecting the environment, and affect the ecological environment of Mountain of Salkantay.

Abroad trekkers peru

I just completed the 4 day Inca Trail trek with Abroad Trekkers. I had such an amazing time and the trek itself was just so much fun! The only sad part about it was the amount of people trekking the trail. From great guides to porters that run ahead and set up your tents, how can you not have a good time! We had a group of 5 and it was a perfect group size.  Any more and you can find yourself waiting around a lot more. I felt like once I was on a role I just wanted to keep going!

Thanks Leo for the great history information on the ruins. Machu Picchu itself is breathtaking, and make sure you sign up for Wuanapicchu early because we missed out! There is however a smaller mountain you can climb which also offers great views.
